Dr. Carolina Heredia, Dr. Robert Gross

Hello Everyone,

If you have not already, I encourage you to use the following link to listen to the most recent episode of the TCC Podcast, featuring Dr. Carolina Heredia and her piece Resonancia Natural.

It was such a pleasure to have Dr. Heredia on the podcast, where we had a very interesting discussion about her piece Resonancia Natural. Something that, in hindsight, I wish we had discussed further is the concept of influence. Dr. Heredia spoke on how Argentinian folk music influences her compositional style, and how it shapes her view of music even if key stylistic points are not explicitly present in her own work. Throughout my time in higher education, my peers and I have often discussed who or what influences our art. It seems as though everyone has a different perspective on what the word “influence” means. Some tend to interpret it to be a goal or a mold to fit into. Others, like Dr. Heredia, seem to treat influence as a new skill or idea that is acquired and used at certain times. I am sure there are a hundred other interpretations of the word influence when it comes to music and composition, and it would be difficult to come to a consensus on a “right” one. And at the end of the day, none of them are wrong. There are no wrong ways to start composition. If you hear a symphony and love the way it sounds and feels, you may be influenced to write a symphony of your own. Or you may be influenced to write a punk rock song. Either way, music, once you hear it yourself, can be fully your own.

Thank you again to Dr. Carolina Heredia for coming onto the podcast.

I am excited to preview that the next episode of the TCC Podcast is going to feature the composer Dr. Robert Gross and his piece Penumbra. Dr. Gross has several musical qualifications under his belt, including music therapist, music theorist and, of course, composer! We talk about all of these different approaches and how they synthesize into his musical style. We get a bit into the conversation of the dreaded “style wars” within composition, or at least how they are not truly relevant in the world of composition. Further than that, we touch on a number of related topics including musical inspiration, compositional process, public music scholarship and much more! I would love to share more about the episode but it will have to wait until this coming Monday!

If you have listened to an episode of the TCC in the past week or two, you might have noticed something new, advertisements! I am excited to say that this podcast is finally monetized in some capacity, something I have been waiting to do for some time now. I remember posting about something similar a while ago when attaching a donation page through Buy Me A Coffee, but please remain assured that all content on the TCC will remain free and fully accessible on all platforms. This podcast is, at its core, a solo passion project. That being said, creating the opportunity for donations and ad monetization allows for a small amount of revenue to help recuperate the operating costs of the website and podcast distribution network. That being said, I am still working on how to best implement ads both in the pre-roll and mid-roll, so please be patient with my own learning process of how best to implement these breaks. Additionally, I have blocked any inappropriate content from being advertised on episodes, but if you hear anything questionable or have suggestions, please let me know!

Again, don’t forget to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, featuring Dr. Carolina Heredia and Resonancia Natural. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and or streaming subscriptions to this coming Monday, August 18th, for the episode featuring Dr. Robert Gross and Penumbra. You won’t want to miss it, and we’ll see you there!
