Emelia Ulrich, Professor Michael Buchler

Emelia Ulrich, Professor Michael Buchler

Hello Everyone,

If you have not already, I encourage you to use the following link to listen to the most recent episode of the TCC Podcast, featuring the composer Emelia Ulrich and her piece Vigil.

It was wonderful to catch up with Emelia on this episode, as we have known each other for a handful of years now. We met in our undergraduate studies at the University of Florida in the violin studio, and in the past year with Emelia studying at Florida State University for her Masters of Composition. Her piece Vigil, and the decision to discuss it on such a public platform, was both endearing and emotionally griping. In the editing and post-release of the episode, it has spurred a decent amount of reflection in myself on this kind of personal work, a reflection that is, as of right now, not personally conclusive. I also really enjoyed our discussion of the state of arts funding and public attitudes towards those disciplines, something that is readily continued in the coming episode. I look forward to seeing Vigil premiered and being able to see this touching piece of remembrance brought to life.

Thank you again to Emelia Ulrich for coming on the podcast and for sharing her piece, Vigil.

I am excited to preview that the next episode of the TCC Podcast is going to feature Professor Michael Buchler! A highly decorated music theorist, writer, academic, and professor; I am so excited to have Dr. Buchler on the TCC! On this coming episode we discuss his many roles in the field, whether SMT President or various other administerial positions, and how they have shaped his work. In a major focus of the episode, Dr. Buchler also discusses the political climate in relation to academic work, the safety of international students, and his efforts within organized labor to make a more equitable work environment. In addition, Dr. Buchler also shares how he stays positive and proactive in the current climate, and how anyone can contribute to the effort of academic independence. We then discuss the recent past, present and the future of the Society for Music Theory, even touching on the recent controversies of Schenkerian Analysis and how to move forward. It was an honor to have Professor Buchler on the podcast, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone!

Again, don’t forget to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, featuring Emelia Ulrich and her piece Vigil.
